Tulane University Fogelmann + Patterson Dorms
As part of a three-phased development of Tulane University’s Bruff Quad, the new construction of two residential dormitories seeks to enhance campus-wide student engagement, residential life, and community growth. The programs for both buildings include a varied matrix of single, double, and resident advisor rooms, community spaces placed intentionally on each floor, and staff and faculty apartments. Facing the energetic McAlister Drive, Fogelman Hall’s entire first floor is dedicated to community growth and the enrichment of student life- inclusive of a large student kitchen + ‘Living Room’, interactive Innovation spaces, ‘Den’ area, and Conference Room open to all Tulane departments. Bayou Hall, sitting between Fogelman and Wall Hall, overlooks the newly landscaped Bruff Quad - the center of the expansive development. Each floor features common spaces of varying scales. The top floor of Bayou Hall includes an expansive student kitchen and lounge with panoramic views of both Tulane and New Orleans.
Fogelman and Bayou establish a dialogue with both the neighboring buildings and the larger context of New Orleans through the use of materials, colors, and proportions. Each building focuses on a color palette that responds to the local environment. Deep sunset and mossy hues are implemented throughout via glazed exterior tile, wood paneling, terazzo flooring, wood baffle ceilings, and sculptural lighting. The exterior facade - comprised of brick, curtainwalls, and metal panels - compliments the materiality of the adjacent dormitories. Accessibility to the site and adacent buildings was made readily available through sloped walkways, benches, and lighting strategies that further encourage a communal lifestyle for students.
